Mondo Scuro, was the alias Matt Frost and Pete Diggens recorded under from 1993-1996.
Frost and Diggens released a stream of vinyl on own imprint Violent Drum and finished when Matt and Pete were discovered by Andrew Weatherall at Sabresonic which led them to sign to Leftfield’s Hard Hands label in 1997 as Dark Globe.
‘Algorithm’, ‘Original mix’ and ‘Cussion mix’ were created overnight in a one room garage behind a row of shops in south east London in ’93. The ‘Original mix’, a much talked about record and cited as the first ever ‘Breaks’ tune, pioneering the genre, is a hybrid of house and drum and bass.
‘Algorithm’ was released as a double A side; The A ‘Original mix’, has a killer beatbox intro diving headfirst into a beefy tight breakbeat groove, The AA ‘Cussion mix’, has a relentless bouncing tribal house feel, it’s hybrid of house and drum and bass made it a signature tune at warehouse parties.
‘Algorithm’ was the duo’s first release that crossed over to commercial radio, championed by DJ’s Colin Dale and Coldcut on their up-front underground dance Kiss FM shows which were the scene’s essential listening shows at the time, ‘Algorithm’ gained instant fame. ‘Algorithm’ made such an impact, BBC Radio One legend John Peel, included the track in his top 5 records of the year 1995.
Originally released on Violent Drum in 95’, ‘Algorithm’ was rereleased on Leftfield’s Hard Hands label in 1997 under the title ‘Mondo Scuro’. The record also featured on classic compilation albums including, Nick Warren’s Essential Mix, Best of House Music, and Dark Globe’s infamous ‘Tales of Dirt & Sparks’, a collection of singles released on Violent Drum, Hard Hands and Meat Katie’s W9Y label from 1995-1999.
